Digital Art: He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

I’ve been watching art tutorials on YouTube, and slowly, slowly, learning to draw and paint digitally. I’m very happy with my little iPad mini and the Procreate app for helping me to express myself visually in ways that I could only dream of before. If you have the art bug too, I have a Pinterest board with some of my favourite free art tutorials here.

The above piece is one of my personal favourites. As soon as I discovered that deep magenta colour, I knew I had to use it in a drawing. (One feature of Procreate I like is that I can save my favourite colours for later).

Here are some of my other recent pieces:

Digital Art: Procrastination

I’ve been MIA lately. I know it. You know it. Neither of us is proud of it. I’ve done it before, and most likely I will do it again. But just like Arnold Schwarzenegger in that one movie, I’ll be back.

It’s hard to remember how things got away from me this time. I believe there was some temporary glitch with WordPress where I couldn’t add tags to my post. I decided to wait a few days, let it pass. A few days turned into a few more. Then my archnemesis, procrastination, reared its ugly head.

As for what I’ve been doing while procrastinating…the answer is quite a lot, but not enough. Some of you may know from previous posts that I’ve been learning to draw in Procreate. I’ve also rebooted my Instagram page, through which I discovered the little cartoon sketches and memes others were posting. I decided to give it a go.

So here it is: one of my first sketches. It’s an ode to my lifelong nemesis. (Do not speak his name. You risk summoning him).

Tiny Stories Collection: A Little Humour

The king had rules for his daughter. No going outside the palace, because there are hooligans out there. Only venture outside during the hours of twilight and dawn, because the sun brings skin cancer and wrinkles, the wind can blow diseases your way, and the moon causes madness. Actually, just stay inside. Much easier. It was the perfect plan, and he would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for that meddling genie and his magic carpet.

It was a watershed moment for the community. Santa, after years of dirty chimneys, leftover cookies and cold milk, had finally had enough. He stood on top of the clocktower, Rudolph glaring at his side, and told the locals he wanted warm cookies or they could buy themselves presents next Christmas.

“Velociraptors didn’t look like they did on Jurassic Park,” my professor told me. “They were only just over 1.5 feet high and they had feathers.”
Great, I thought. I spent my childhood having nightmares about chickens with sharp teeth.
